When My Name Was Keoko Day 7

We have come to the end of "When My Name was Keoko." Today we are going to look at what life is like after World War II for both of these countries.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions individually

1. What did you learn about the power of TRADITIONS from this book?
2. Do you think Kamikaze pilots are still around today? Can you think of something happening today that is similar? Why?
3. Would you volunteer for the military like Tae-yul did? Why or Why not?

When My Name Was Keoko Day 6

잘 먹겠습니다 (jal meokkesseumnida) (This is how you say 'Bon Appetite" before a meal)

Over the weekend we had a lot of reading, but it was an intense ride for Tae-yul as he joined the Japanese Army and became a kamikaze pilot. Today we are going to explore more the world that Tae-yul came into.


DO NOW: Answer the following questions independently:


1. What is something that a kamikaze and a samurai have in common?
2. List 3 rules created by the Japanese against the Koreans during World War II?
3. How does Korea's geography affect their culture?

CLASSWORK: Discuss chapters 24-29. Create a comic strip of an event in a kamikaze's life.


HOMEWORK: Finish the comic strip if it is not completed in class.


Start reading Chapters 30-32 in "When My Name Was Keoko" and answer the questions in the homework folder. Due on Wednesday

Today we will continue discussing When My Name Was Keoko. We have seen from Sun-hee that words are really important to her. We will talk about why words are so important to her, and how she feels that her words may mean less.

What is a Samurai?

Konnichiwa! (‘ko-knee-chi-wa’)こんにちは。(“Good Afternoon” in Japanese.)

On Friday we learned about the geography of Japan and Korea and how their closeness to China and each other helped create their culture. We also took a closer look at Korea's culture. Today we are going to look at Japan’s history and culture. We will look at a very interesting subject in Japan, the Samurai warrior. The Samurai warrior was considered one of the most important people in ancient Japan, and their ideas still have an influence on Japan today.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions individually
  1. What is a fishery?
  2. What are two ways that Japan and Korea’s geography or culture are similar?
  3. Where do most people live in Japan and Korea? Why?

How does Japan’s and Korea’s Geography Affect their Culture?

What an exciting week we had! We finished our board games, had a game day, and took our quiz on China. This week we are starting our new country, two countries in fact, Japan and Korea. These two countries have similar cultures and geographies. Their histories have also been interlinked in intense ways throughout history.

Hello! (Because of the tourism, many people in the large cities of China speak English.)

Today we begin a very exciting day! We are starting our project for China. But first, we are going to have a little fun!

DO NOW: Grab a piece of paper from your table. In each small square, write a the numbers from 1-25 in the corner of each box. THEY CANNOT BE IN ORDER. (THIS MEANS THAT YOU CANNOT HAVE TWO NUMBERS IN A ROW NEXT TO EACH OTHER)!!!!!!!

How Did the Chinese Interact with Other Countries?

We left off learning about Confucianism and how it affected the lives and government of the Chinese People. The ideals of Confucianism are still widely taught today in the households. Another important part of China's culture today is its Trade. Nearly everything we own says 'Made in China.' But was China always the number one place to go to for goods? Today we are going to find out what China's trade has been like.

What is Confucianism and How Did It Affect Chinese Culture?

China's past has always been an important part of Chinese culture today. The people of China take great pride in ancient values and traditions. Today we are going to learn about a belief that was a major influence on not only China's people, but also their government. This belief system is called Confucianism.

What Chinese Achievements do We Still Use Today?

Zǎo’ān! ("zow on") Good Morning in Mandarin!

Yesterday we learned about the different dynasties in China's history. As you learned about the different dynasties, you learned that many were known for their inventions, discoveries, and achievements. Today we are going to take a closer look at the different inventions and discoveries from ancient China. Just like the discoveries from ancient India, many Chinese achievements were so advanced that they are still used today!

DO NOW: Answer the following questions
1. What is Mandate of Heaven?
2. What is the grand canal?
3. What is the Great Wall?

ALSO, make sure that you have the SCAN app. We will be using it today. If not, it can be found in Self-Service!

What are the Key Dynasties of China's Past?

We had a big day yesterday. We took our quiz on India, and began to learn about our next country, China. China is the largest country in the world. Their history and culture is rich in ancient traditions, language, food, and innovations. As always, in order to learn about a country's present culture, we have to first look at the past. China today takes much value in preserving their past culture and traditions. Today we are going to look at the key points in China's past. Like many other ancient cultures, China was divided into dynasties.

DO NOW: As a group, look at the picture at your table. What do you notice? Have the recorder write down 10 things that you notice about the timeline. Be prepared to share what you discovered.

How are Hinduism and Buddhism Similar/Different?

Last week, we learned about 2 major religions that began in India. Both religions are popular religions today and have widely shaped the people of India and Asia. Today we are going to look at the similarities and differences between the two religions.

1.  List the name of the four different levels of the Hindu Caste System and which job each level had.
2.  How were the castes kept distinct (seperated) from one another?

What is Hinduism and What do Hindus Believe?

Asalaam Aleikum! (In Pakistan, many people are muslim and speak Arabic)


To truly understand India’s culture, you have to understand their religion. Religion is a very important part of Indian life. There are many religions that began in India that are still around today. One of these religions, Hinduism, is the 3rd most common religion in the world. Today we are going to learn about the religion of Hinduism and how it shaped the Indian culture.

DO NOW: Go up to Mrs. Moore and get a slip. Then, take your things and move to the appropriate table. Grab a classwork from the table and answer the first 2 questions. Use the board to help you.

CLASSWORK: 2.3 Hinduism. Mrs. Moore will pass out a copy. We will be simulating a Hindu society while we learn about the religion that shaped it.
