When My Name Was Keoko Day 7

We have come to the end of "When My Name was Keoko." Today we are going to look at what life is like after World War II for both of these countries.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions individually

1. What did you learn about the power of TRADITIONS from this book?
2. Do you think Kamikaze pilots are still around today? Can you think of something happening today that is similar? Why?
3. Would you volunteer for the military like Tae-yul did? Why or Why not?

CLASSWORK: Discuss Chapters 30-32. Complete 2.16 Japan and Korea Today Classwork.

HOMEWORK: Finish Asia Projects. DUE FRIDAY!!!

When My Name Was Keoko Day 6

Over the weekend we had a lot of reading, but it was an intense ride for Tae-yul as he joined the Japanese Army and became a kamikaze pilot. Today we are going to explore more the world that Tae-yul came into.


DO NOW: Answer the following questions independently:


1. What is something that a kamikaze and a samurai have in common?
2. List 3 rules created by the Japanese against the Koreans during World War II?
3. How does Korea's geography affect their culture?

CLASSWORK: Discuss chapters 24-29. Create a comic strip of an event in a kamikaze's life.


HOMEWORK: Finish the comic strip if it is not completed in class.


Start reading Chapters 30-32 in "When My Name Was Keoko" and answer the questions in the homework folder. Due on Wednesday

Today we will continue discussing When My Name Was Keoko. We have seen from Sun-hee that words are really important to her. We will talk about why words are so important to her, and how she feels that her words may mean less.

How does Japan’s and Korea’s Geography Affect their Culture?

Oahyou! (‘o-hi-o’) おはよう (That is Japanese for “Good Morning”)

What an exciting week we had! We finished our board games, had a game day, and took our quiz on China. This week we are starting our new country, two countries in fact, Japan and Korea. These two countries have similar cultures and geographies. Their histories have also been interlinked in intense ways throughout history.

DO NOW: As a group, look at the picture on the board and answer the following question:
How does being near Canada, Mexico, and 2 oceans affect our culture?

During war times, Propaganda is a key aspect of creating a sense of nationalism! We started to see some examples of Propaganda in chapters 6-9, and will look at them more today.

What is Korean Culture Like?

Today we begin our second novel study! We will be reading a book about a Korean girl who lives during a time when Japan ruled Korea. As we learn her story, we will be learning a lot about Korean culture. Before we begin our new book, we will take the time to learn a little bit about the Korean culture and lifestyle of our lead characters.

DO NOW: In your journal, answer the following prompt. Use the internet to help you.

What trade road did merchants use to bring ideas from China to Europe? Name the Road and give 5 facts about that road.
