We are almost finished with our African Safari. :( But one of the best stops is yet to come!

Safari Webquest

We have started our African Safari! We have already learned so much about the area and the people that live there. But we are not done yet! Today we are going to continue our virtual safari!

DO NOW: Download Book Creator to your iPad. It is in the App Store. There are two, make sure you download the free one.

CLASSWORK: Remember, the website is sites.google.com/a/prairieschool.com/east-african-safari-webquest/ .  By the end of class, you should have Days 2, 3, and 4 done.

Note: At the bottom of the first page, there is a map to color in. You color in a little bit each "Day." As you travel to a different place, you will mark it on that map by coloring in where the area is located. It should not be done all at once. It does not need to be done before you begin Day 2.

HOMEWORK: If you did not finish your classwork up to Day 4, it is your homework. If you finished the Webquest all together, then get started on your journal. Journals are due on Tuesday! 

If you are not going to be in class on Thursday because you are going to the Soccer Game, your homework is also to finish Day 5 (the classwork for Thursday)!

Why does East Africa Have So Many Different Climates?

Last Friday we took our quiz on North Africa. Today we are going to start our next region, East Africa! East Africa is one of the most exciting places in all of Africa. There are so many different climates in this one region. You can be travelling through the desert one day, and making a snow angel the next! East Africa is a very popular tourist destination for one main reason, going on safari! Over the next few days, we are going to go on a virtual safari to explore the different places, people, and animals of East Africa.

North Africa Review Day

We have our quiz on North Africa TOMORROW!!!!!! We have learned a lot and need to make sure that we remember it all.

What is North Africa like today?

Saleem Aleikum! (As you might have guessed, nearly all of North Africa speaks Arabic. Today we are going to learn why.)

We had an awesome day yesterday at our museum! We learned so much about the ancient Egyptian culture and the achievements that they are best known for. Today we are going to learn what culture is like today in North Africa. In some ways the culture is very similar, but in some ways the culture has changed a lot.

DO NOW: Define the following vocabulary words. If you can, try not to use your vocab flashcards:
1. What is a dynasty?
2. What is an obelisk?
3. What is a noble?

CLASSWORK: Gallery Walk. Classwork = 1.15 North Africa Culture Today. We will walk around the room and use the signs to help us answer the questions on the homework. If you need, the signs for the gallery walk are also on the eBackpack.

HOMEWORK: North Africa Today Homework in the eBackpack. Fill in the Venn Diagram comparing "Past Egypt" with "Present Egypt." You should have at least 8 sentences on your paper, and their need to be at least 2 sentences in each section.

Egyptian Museum Day

Today is the day! All of our work is finally going to be shown for all to see!

DO NOW: With your group, finalize any last minute details of your project and prepare your table. On eBackpack, upload your essay!

Museum Project!

Yesteday we learned about the Egyptian Achievements that we always see and hear about. Today we are going to start a project about these many achievements. The 6th grade is in charge of creating a museum exhibit about the different achievements found in Egypt. Each group will be given an achievement and will be responsible for creating a display about their Achievement. On October 20th, our classroom will become a museum, and we will showcase our displays!

DO NOW: Each person, answer the following questions:

What are the major Egyptian Achiements?

Last week we started to learn about the Egyptian Civilization. We learned about what happened in their timeline and the types of jobs that people had. Today we are going to look at the most important aspects of the Egyptian Civilization. We are going to learn about the pieces that everyone thinks about when they think of this amazing civilization!!!!

DO NOW: Then, go into self-service app and install the Scan app. If self service is not working, go into the App store and download it, it is free.

What Types of Jobs did People have in Ancient Egypt?

We started to learn about all the different Kingdoms and eras in the long history of Ancient Egypt. But what was life like in Ancient Egypt? What types of jobs did people have? Were most people rich or poor? Today we are going to learn about the social structure of Ancient Egypt.

We will then break up into different groups where you will share what you learned with other people and they will share what you learned to create an interactive foldable.

How do you Create a Timeline?

Way back at the beginning of the school year, we took a diagnostic to see what you knew and didn't know. One of the things that many students had a hard time with was timelines. Today we are going to learn what a timeline is, how to read a timeline, and how to make a timeline. We are going to do all of this, while also learning about the Ancient Egyptians!

DO NOW: Start immediately working on your classwork. There is an article about timelines for you to read. Then use the article to fill in the blanks in the Notes section on the next page.

Review Egyptian Achievements

Bonjour! (Hmm... people in Morocco also speak French, as well as Arabic)

On Monday we started to learn about the different achievements in Egypt. Let's spend the day finishing up our work and then reviewing what we learned!

DO NOW: Write about the following response in your Journal. You must write at least 15 sentences. Use the past 3 journal entries to help give you information for your paragraphs. These are being graded. The more information you put into your Entry the better. You CANNOT use your ipad.

Imagine that you have been captured by surprise by a neighboring West African tribe. You have been sold to white men who are leading you and your family toward big ships. You have heard about the slave trade and the Transatlantic crossing, but you never thought it would happen to you.

Tell what happened when you were captured by a neighboring tribe. How did you feel being betrayed by people? How do you feel toward the men who put you in shackles? How are they treating you? What do you expect? What do you fear? Do you have the will to survive the long Middle Passage?

CLASSWORK: We will finish our stations from Monday and go over them.
