What is Confucianism and How Did It Affect Chinese Culture?

China's past has always been an important part of Chinese culture today. The people of China take great pride in ancient values and traditions. Today we are going to learn about a belief that was a major influence on not only China's people, but also their government. This belief system is called Confucianism.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions individually.
1. What is loess?
2. List 3 inventions created by the ancient Chinese.
3. Which Dynasty do you think was the most successful? Why? You can use your foldable or your notes from yesterday.

What Chinese Achievements do We Still Use Today?

Zǎo’ān! ("zow on") Good Morning in Mandarin!

Yesterday we learned about the different dynasties in China's history. As you learned about the different dynasties, you learned that many were known for their inventions, discoveries, and achievements. Today we are going to take a closer look at the different inventions and discoveries from ancient China. Just like the discoveries from ancient India, many Chinese achievements were so advanced that they are still used today!

DO NOW: Answer the following questions
1. What is Mandate of Heaven?
2. What is the grand canal?
3. What is the Great Wall?

ALSO, make sure that you have the SCAN app. We will be using it today. If not, it can be found in Self-Service!

What are the Key Dynasties of China's Past?

Nǐ hǎo! ("nee how") Hello in Mandarin Chinese!

We had a big day yesterday. We took our quiz on India, and began to learn about our next country, China. China is the largest country in the world. Their history and culture is rich in ancient traditions, language, food, and innovations. As always, in order to learn about a country's present culture, we have to first look at the past. China today takes much value in preserving their past culture and traditions. Today we are going to look at the key points in China's past. Like many other ancient cultures, China was divided into dynasties.

DO NOW: As a group, look at the picture at your table. What do you notice? Have the recorder write down 10 things that you notice about the timeline. Be prepared to share what you discovered.

CLASSWORK: 2.9 China's Dynasties in eBackpack. As a group you will be given one section to read and answer the questions. Then, you will fill in a foldable.

We have learned about a major part of India’s culture today, the religion. Today we are going to learn about other main features of India’s culture today by doing our Gallery Walk.

How are Hinduism and Buddhism Similar/Different?

Last week, we learned about 2 major religions that began in India. Both religions are popular religions today and have widely shaped the people of India and Asia. Today we are going to look at the similarities and differences between the two religions.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions
1.  List the name of the four different levels of the Hindu Caste System and which job each level had.
2.  How were the castes kept distinct (seperated) from one another?
3. What is reincarnation?

Wednesday we started to learn about a major religion that began in India, Hinduism. Today we are going to look at another religion that began in India. Like I said, religion is very important to the Indian culture. That is why it is so important to learn about both of these interesting religions.

What is Hinduism and What do Hindus Believe?

Asalaam Aleikum! (In Pakistan, many people are muslim and speak Arabic)


To truly understand India’s culture, you have to understand their religion. Religion is a very important part of Indian life. There are many religions that began in India that are still around today. One of these religions, Hinduism, is the 3rd most common religion in the world. Today we are going to learn about the religion of Hinduism and how it shaped the Indian culture.

DO NOW: Go up to Mrs. Moore and get a slip. Then, take your things and move to the appropriate table. Grab a classwork from the table and answer the first 2 questions. Use the board to help you.

CLASSWORK: 2.3 Hinduism. Mrs. Moore will pass out a copy. We will be simulating a Hindu society while we learn about the religion that shaped it.

Yesterday we made our map of Asia. There are so many amazing geographical features in this area. Today we are going to begin our first country of India. India’s history is very unique and complex. India has created some of the most amazing achievements that the world has ever seen, and that are still widely used today. However, before we can learn about the culture of India, we have to learn about their past. Today we will be looking at the people from India’s past to see what they have in common, and what that might tell us about India today.

DO NOW: Answer the following questions
1. What are the 2 major rivers in India?
2. What is found in between India and China? Do you think that is helpful or no? Why?
3. Where do you think most people in India live?
